Conducting Masterclass: Arturo Tamayo and the Orchestra of the North Bohemian Opera & Ballet Theatre

Program

Ludwig van Beethoven — Symphony No. 8 in F major, Op. 93 — approx. 25 minutes
Claude Debussy — Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune — approx. 10 minutes
César Franck — Symphony in D minor — approx. 36 minutes
An instrumental concerto will be added to the masterclass repertoire.

Conductors are expected to purchase and study their scores before the start of the masterclass. It is important to listen to the works and prepare them as thoroughly as possible in order to gain the maximum benefit from the masterclass.

Each active participant will be entitled to:

• a minimum of 90 minutes of podium time conducting the Orchestra of the North Bohemian Opera & Ballet Theatre
• 60 minutes of podium time in four-hand piano sessions with the soloist
• conducting in the dress rehearsal and the final concert
• attendance at the video analysis session, all meetings, classes and rehearsals

Each semi-active participant will be entitled to:

• 90 minutes of podium time in four-hand piano sessions with Maestro and the soloist
• attendance at the video analysis session, all meetings, classes, rehearsals and the final concert, without the opportunity to conduct the orchestra

A certificate of participation will be provided to all participants who complete the masterclass for conductors.

Concert

The concert program will be divided among participants.
The final concert will be held on June 11, 2027 at the City Theatre in Ústí nad Labem.

ORCHESTRA

Professional Orchestra of the North Bohemian Opera & Ballet Theatre.
The theatre in Ústí nad Labem was built in 1908–1909 in Neo-Baroque style with Art Nouveau elements and has a capacity of 878 seats. Today it is a major regional institution for opera, musical theatre and ballet, with its own professional orchestra.

Maestro

Arturo Tamayo is an internationally experienced conductor whose career has been closely associated with leading European orchestras, major opera houses, contemporary music ensembles, and international festivals. He has conducted ensembles such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, WDR Symphony Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra della RAI, Gustav Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta, Klangforum Wien, and many other prominent European orchestras. His operatic work has included engagements at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Vienna State Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Teatro Real Madrid, Opéra de Paris, Teatro Massimo Bellini and other major theatres, conducting repertoire ranging from Mozart, Verdi and Puccini to Britten, Berg, Schoenberg, Rihm and contemporary opera. Tamayo has also been a frequent guest at major international festivals including the Salzburg Festival, Venice Biennale, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Wien Modern, Holland Festival and Berliner Festwochen, and is particularly respected for his work with 20th- and 21st-century music and world premieres. His extensive discography includes award-winning recordings of works by Mauricio Ohana, Iannis Xenakis, Franco Donatoni and Goffredo Petrassi. As a teacher, he has given conducting instruction at the Freiburg University of Music, Graz University of the Arts, Musikene in the Basque Country, the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, and numerous international conducting masterclasses throughout Europe. For young conductors, his combination of extensive orchestral, operatic and contemporary-music experience makes his teaching especially valuable in score preparation, rehearsal technique, stylistic understanding, communication with professional orchestras, and the practical development of an individual conducting approach.

Recording

Video recordings of orchestra rehearsals and the concert are included in the fee.
All sessions with the orchestra will be video recorded, and each conductor will receive their recordings via the internet.

Masterclass fees

The active participant fee is €2000.
For more flexible individual terms for active participants, please contact the masterclass manager.

Semi-active participant fee is €600–650.
Daily visitor (passive participation) fee is €40.
There is no registration/application fee.

Payment schedule
- 25% of the participant’s fee must be paid as a deposit by bank transfer no later than two weeks after confirmation of participation by the organizers;
- the remaining balance must be paid no later than 30 days before the start of the masterclass;
The masterclass fee is 100% refundable only if the masterclass is canceled or postponed by the organizer.
