Arturo Tamayo is an internationally established Spanish conductor and conducting teacher. He studied conducting with Francis Travis at the Freiburg University of Music and further developed his conducting through courses with Pierre Boulez in Basel and Witold Rowicki in Vienna. His musical education also included composition studies with Wolfgang Fortner and Klaus Huber.
Throughout his international career, Tamayo has conducted many leading European orchestras and ensembles, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra London, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, WDR Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Gustav Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Prague Symphony Orchestra.
He has appeared at major international festivals including the Salzburg Festival, Venice Biennale, Donaueschingen Festival, Lucerne Festival, Wien Modern and the Holland Festival. Tamayo is particularly respected for his expertise in 20th- and 21st-century repertoire and has conducted world premieres of works by composers including Iannis Xenakis, John Cage, Franco Donatoni, Wolfgang Rihm, Mauricio Kagel and Klaus Huber.
His opera experience includes productions at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera, Teatro Real Madrid, Paris Opera and other major European opera houses, with repertoire ranging from Mozart, Verdi, Puccini and Tchaikovsky to Schoenberg, Berg, Stravinsky and contemporary opera.
Alongside his conducting career, Arturo Tamayo has extensive experience as a teacher. He has taught conducting and interpretation at the Freiburg University of Music, University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, Musikene in the Basque Country and the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, and has led numerous conducting masterclasses throughout Europe.
His extensive discography has received numerous international awards. Particularly acclaimed are his recordings of the orchestral works of Mauricio Ohana and Iannis Xenakis, which have earned major European recording distinctions.
