Professor Georg Christoph Sandmann attended the G.Fr. Handel Special School for Music Education in Berlin
from 1974 to 1983 and was a member of the Berlin Radio Children's Choir. From 1984 to 1989, he studied
conducting with Professor Rolf Reuter, piano, voice, and composition at the Musikhochschule Hanns Eisler in
Berlin.
From 1989 to 1992, he worked as First Kapellmeister at the Theater Zwickau, and subsequently, until 1998, as
Second Kapellmeister at the Städtische Theater Chemnitz. He was appointed General Music Director of the
Mittelsächsische Theater- und Philharmonie GmbH in 1999 and of the Plauen-Zwickau Theatre in 2003.
Since 2010, Georg Christoph Sandmann has worked freelance as a conductor, pianist, and university lecturer in
Germany and abroad, performing in numerous concerts and at various opera festivals.
He is the artistic director of several orchestras and choirs.
Since 2000, he has been teaching orchestral conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Dresden Carl Maria von
Weber, and since 2016/17 at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts, and since 2024 also at the
Nuremberg University of Music.
From 2012 to 2022, Professor Sandmann led masterclasses in orchestral conducting at the International
Mendelssohn Academy Leipzig, and from July 2017 to 2021, together with Christian Thielemann, he led the
Bayreuth Festival's masterclass in conducting.
His extensive teaching activities have taken him to numerous masterclasses for orchestral and choral conductors
both in Germany and abroad, including several trips to the USA since 2002, to Thessaloniki (Greece) in May
2019, and since 2022 to Romania, Turkey, and currently to Serbia, Austria, and Italy.
Georg Christoph Sandmann's artistic work is characterized by numerous new instrumentations of stage works
and choral-symphonic literature.
He also organizes various lecture series on musicological topics and concerts featuring discussions and literature.
