C. Orff, Carmina Burana, overview of the conducting masterclass

We offer you a 7-day Conducting masterclass with a fully professional symphony orchestra - the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, Academic Choir Zerotín, the choir and soloists of the Moravian Theatre Olomouc.

The masterclass will be lead by Director of the Orchestra Faculty at the Prague Conservatory - Maestro Miriam Němcová and Professor of the Music Academy of Art in Prague, Guest Professor at the University of Fine Arts in Zürich and Artistic Director & Principal Conductor of the Orchestra Theatre J.K.Tyl in Plzen - Norbert Baxa.

The masterclass includes orchestral rehearsals, rehearsals with choirs and soloists, individual lessons with pianists, a dress rehearsal and the final concert.

The conducting masterclass will take place in Reduta Hall, Olomouc, Czech Republic.


Mandatory program:

C. Orff, Carmina Burana
J. Brahms Symphony No 1, in C minor;
A. Dvořák - Symphony No 9, in E minor;

Additional music works:

J. Brahms - Hungarian Dances No.1, 4, 5, 6;
A. Dvořák - Slavonic Dances No.1,7,8,15;

Conductors are expected to purchase and study scores prior to the start of the course. It is important that you listen to and prepare the pieces as much as possible to gain the maximum benefits from the course.

Dates and the structure of the masterclass 16 - 22 April 2016

Each participant will have:

100 minutes - podium time with the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra,
25-30 minutes - the rehearsal with the choir and piano (Carmina Burana)
90 minutes - individual sessions with piano and soloists.

Preliminary schedule

16/04/2016 - arriving, accommodation, the opening of the masterclass, individual/public lessons with pianists.
17/04/2016 - individual lessons, analysis of conducting techniques, a work with pianists and soloists (Carmina Burana) .
18/04/2016 - choir rehearsal with pianists, orchestra rehearsal, lessons with pianists
19/04/2016 - orchestra rehearsal
20/04/2016 - orchestra rehearsal(s),
21/04/2016 - orchestra and choir rehearsal(s) with soloists
22/04/2016 - Dress rehearsal and the Public concert

Every participant will receive the final schedule after the deadline.

Application deadline: March 1st, 2016.


Each Active participant will conduct a Dress rehearsal and Final concert. The concert program will be divided between participants.


The course will be taught in English,

We will make our best effort to provide language support if you do not speak this language. Please make a note in your application if you need that support.


Accommodation costs are included in the price.
We provide you an accommodation in the FLORA hotel ***, single rooms with breakfast with the price € 43 per night, nevertheless you can stay in different hotel. Accommodation costs will not be included in the price in this case.


Travel costs must be covered by each participant.

There are several airports around Olomouc: in Prague, Vienna, Brno and Ostrava.


All sessions with the orchestra and choir will be video recorded, and each participant will receive his or her videos on DVD or your USB stick.

You can use also your own cameras for video recording.

We can provide the multi-angle recording of the concert upon your request with additional cost.
