Maestro Mark Laycock

Maestro Mark Laycock icon link made his conducting début at age 21 with the Philadelphia Orchestra, returning to the podium of that great orchestra on several occasions over the ensuing years. He has conducted more than 2,000 works with a wide array of orchestras and opera companies in Europe and Asia, as well as in Israel, North America, Central and South America, with orchestras of London, Paris, Berlin, Zurich, Moscow, Kiev, Montréal, Mexico City, Seoul, and Taipei, among others.
Mark Laycock was Music Director of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra for more than 20 years, transforming that orchestra from a small chamber orchestra into a full and critically acclaimed professional symphony orchestra awarded Citations of Excellence for two consecutive years from the State Arts Council of New Jersey for “exhibiting the highest standards of artistic excellence.” He was also Associate Conductor of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra from 2000-2003. Over the years he has developed a reputation for stepping in on short notice to conduct without rehearsal, including performances of Ein Heldenleben, Carmina Burana, Brahms Symphonies from memory, and complete productions of “Salome” and “Carmen”, all to great acclaim.

Program:

Mozart: Overture - 'Don Giovanni'
Beethoven: Symphony no. 4 in B♭ major, op. 60
Brahms: Academic Festival Overture, Op.80
P. Tchaikovsky. Symphony No. 5
Conductors are expected to purchase and study their scores before the start of the masterclass for conductors. It is important that you listen to the pieces and prepare them as much as possible to gain the maximum benefits from the masterclass.

Each Active participant will be entitled to:
a minimum of 90 minutes of podium time conducting the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra
60 minutes of podium time in four hand piano sessions
• each Active participant will conduct a dress rehearsal, the final concert or a dressed recording session
• attending all meetings, classes and rehearsals
Each Semi-active participant will be entitled to:
90 minutes of podium time in four hand piano sessions
• attending all meetings, classes, rehearsals and the final concert, without an opportunity to conduct the orchestra
Qualified participants will be selected gradually by the 1st of April.

Concert

The concert program will be divided among participants.
The Final concert will be held on the 17th of May 2024 in the Reduta Hall, Olomouc.

Language

The masterclass will be taught in English.

Recording

All sessions with the orchestra will be video recorded and each conductor will receive his/her videos via Internet.
You can use also your own cameras for video recording of piano sessions.
Video recording of orchestra rehearsals and the concert is included in the price.
We can provide also a multi-angle recording of the concert upon your request with an additional cost.

Location

The course will take place in Olomouc icon link, Czech Republic. The town is located between Prague and Vienna.

     Historical place: the famous composer and conductor Gustav Mahler worked at the German Public Theater (now the Moravian Theatre in Olomouc)

Accommodation

Accommodation costs must be covered by each participant of the course.

Transportation

Travel costs must be covered by each participant.
Getting from Prague to Olomouc by Train
2½h, hourly IC/EC trains; 2h, SC Pendolino every two hours.
Fast trains (category R) are useless at this route, they're slower and cost the same as IC/EC.
Regular fare is € 12, second person in a group (of 2 or more) pays € 8, extra people pay € 7, SporoTiket is € 8.

Masterclass fees

Active participant's fee is € 1950.
  Active participant fee includes:
- conducting the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra | * 90 minutes
- individual lessons with Maestro Mark Laycock | * 60 minutes of podium time in four-hands piano sessions;
- participation in all meetings, classes, rehearsals;
- the final concert;
- recorded orchestra rehearsals and the final concert.

Semi-active participant fee is €600
Semi-active participant fee includes:
- 90 minutes of podium time in four hand piano sessions
- listening all the meetings, classes, rehearsals and the final concert
- possible time with the orchestra

Daily Visitors' (passive participation) fee is €40
There is no registration/application fee.
Payment schedule
- 25 % of the participant fee has to be paid upon the organizers` confirmation of your participation;
- the rest of the fee has to be paid via bank transfer 30 days before the masterclass starts at the latest.
The deposit is 100% refundable only in case of cancellation of the masterclass by the organizer.
